Introduction
Scan media is a core part of the RollCall Safety platform, offering seamless and secure student registration on and off buses, using NFC/RFID enabled tags and cards. It improves visibility, simplifies operations, and supports real-time tracking without the need for manual rollcalls or bookings.
Compatibility: Supported Scan Media Types & Formats
RollCall exclusively supports NFC-based scan media via Android mobile devices with NFC readers.
✅ Supported Media Types
NFC RFID Cards: Including MIFARE Classic-compatible cards.
SmartRider Cards: Issued to WA students by Monitor WA, often compatible if they meet system criteria.
RollCall Tags: Pre-configured and ready to use.
Custom School-Issued Cards: Must meet format and encoding requirements.
❌ Unsupported
Barcode or QR code tags
Encrypted or proprietary format cards (e.g., DESFire in decimal format)
Cards without unencrypted UID in default sector
Cards with UIDs longer than 16 hexadecimal digits
Technical Requirement: RollCall reads UID if:
Stored in the default sector
Unencrypted
≤16-digit format
Integration: How to Add Scan Media to RollCall
You can assign card/tag codes to students in two ways:
1. Manual Assignment
Go to the student’s record.
Tap “Assign Scan Media” and scan the card/tag on an NFC reader input device or manually input the UID (card code/tag number).
2. API-Based Assignment
RollCall supports automated assignment via API, where card production systems or third-party platforms post card codes directly to RollCall during the production process.
Key Attributes:
Match is made via Student Number attribute
Card code is passed as a valid value (all codes in the system must be one of - Decimal, Rev decimal, Hexadecimal, Rev Hexadecimal and less than 16 chars)
Integration Support Available:
- PPC Systems support can assist with system-level setup.
- Monitor WA can pass Smartrider card codes with an API subscription
- Alternatively, RollCall provides API documentation for URL-based posting.
To request access to API integration details, contact support@rollcall.com.au.
Using Cards & Tags Together
RollCall supports assigning multiple scan media types to a student:
RollCall-issued tags: Attached to bags, keyrings, or uniforms.
School or government-issued NFC cards: Like ID cards or SmartRider.
This allows flexible travel and ensures redundancy.
About SmartRider Cards (WA)
SmartRider cards are public transport cards issued by Monitor WA and often used by WA schools. They are fully compatible with RollCall system and we work with monitor Wa to transfer the card codes to RollCall on production.
