Save and restore versions of a Smart Route planning session

Smart Route lets you save named versions of a planning session so you can experiment with route changes without losing an earlier plan.

Each saved version records:

• The version name or label
• The date and time it was saved
• The person who saved it

You can review an earlier version without replacing your current work. You can also restore a previous version when you need to return the editable parts of your planning session to an earlier state.

Save a named version

To save a version of your planning session:

1. Open the Smart Route planning session.
2. Make the required route or planning changes.
3. Select Save.
4. Choose the option to save a new version.
5. Enter a clear name for the version, such as:
   • Before timetable update
   • Term 3 planning
   • Proposed afternoon routes
6. Confirm the save.

The new version will appear in the session’s version history with its label, author, and save date.

The updated Save control also indicates when your planning session contains changes that have not yet been saved.

Review an earlier version

You can open a previous version to review the planning session as it appeared when that version was saved.

1. Open the planning session’s version history.
2. Locate the version you want to review.
3. Select the version to open it.

Reviewing a version does not automatically replace your current planning session. You can return to your current work without restoring the version.

Detailed comparisons showing every change between two versions are not currently available.

Restore an earlier version

Restoring a version replaces the current editable planning state with the selected version.

To restore a version:

1. Open the planning session’s version history.
2. Select the version you want to restore.
3. Choose Restore.
4. Review the warning explaining what will be replaced.
5. Confirm the restoration.

Make sure you have saved any work you want to keep before restoring an earlier version.

Protected routes

Routes that have already been committed are pinned to their current state.

A version restore cannot silently overwrite routes that are already Scheduled or Live. If the selected version conflicts with a protected route, Smart Route will stop the restore and explain what must be resolved before you can continue.

You may need to explicitly unassign the affected route before restoring the earlier planning state.

This protection prevents active transport arrangements from being changed accidentally.

Frequently asked questions

Can I review an old version without restoring it?

Yes. Opening a version for review does not replace your current planning session.

What information is shown in the version history?

Each version shows its name or label, the person who saved it, and the date and time it was saved.

Can restoring a version change a Live route?

No. Routes that are Scheduled or Live cannot be silently overwritten by restoring a planning version.

Can I compare two versions?

You can review saved versions, but a detailed side-by-side change comparison is not currently available.

What should I name a version?

Use a name that explains why the version was saved or what planning stage it represents. For example, Before route optimisation, Proposed Term 3 routes, or Final review before scheduling.
